The Louisiana Department of Health has awarded $1.25 million to the Ochsner Translational Research Infectious Disease Laboratory for Whole Genome Sequencing and analysis of up to 1,500 antibiotic resistant organisms.

Changes in resistance and genetic relatedness of isolates sequenced will be combined with demographic and outcomes data to create a comparative database tracking evolution over time of carbapenem resistant organisms. The combination of prospectively collected and historical bacterial isolates which will be sequenced will generate a wealth of information about bacterial infections present in Louisiana.

Pictured are George Pankey, MD – Sr. Physician, Director, Translational Research Infectious Disease Laboratory and Deborah Ashcraft, MLS(ASCP)SM – Supervisor, Translational Research Infectious Disease Laboratory

For completion of this project, Dr. Pankey and his team will be collaborating with BioInfoExperts on analysis of sequencing data.
