The fungal infection mucormycosis can be difficult to diagnose and can be fatal. Such infections are rare, but the summer issue of the Ochsner Journal has reports on two patients who contracted mucormycosis, one associated with an open patellar fracture and the other associated with the central nervous system. The patients’ outcomes were very different.
Also in the just-published issue, former Ochsner surgeon Adam I. Riker is the senior author on an important analysis of mastectomy outcomes. Which is safer: going home the same day or staying in the hospital overnight after the procedure? Riker and his team analyzed 22,642 cases from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database to determine the answer.
Topics of other original research offerings in the summer issue include the 2016 expansion of Medicaid in Louisiana, cognitive decline of patients with Alzheimer disease, and factors that can help predict emergency delivery in patient with placenta previa.
