Standout papers from Ochsner authors are the highlights of the winter issue of Ochsner Journal.
Ochsner’s Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine challenged the current narrative favoring sugammadex over neostigmine as a neuromuscular blocking reversal agent, and their results showed no perioperative time savings with sugammadex under real-world clinical conditions. The Ochsner researchers presented these findings at the International Anesthesia Research Society Annual Meeting in Honolulu in March 2022 and at the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October 2022. Dr. Bobby Nossaman’s editorial in the winter issue augments the research paper with additional data and an explanation of the Hawthorne effect.
From Ochsner’s Transplant and Neurology departments comes a report of how cutting-edge virtual reality and 3-dimensional modeling tools were used to re-evaluate a kidney donor’s anatomy. The selection committee initially denied the donor because of his kidney’s vascular complexity, but the models provided essential detail demonstrating that the left kidney was acceptable. The result: the donor was able to provide the organ for his brother. Two authors of this paper, Drs. Korak Sarkar and Dennis Sonnier, are the featured contributors for the winter issue.
A team led by Dr. George Chimento in Ochsner Orthopedics delved into the relationship between the incidence of infection after total joint arthroplasty and the time of year when the surgery was performed. In their study, seasonality didn’t have any relationship to postop infection.
In September 2022, Ochsner board member and critical care physician Dr. Suma Jain addressed the Ochsner Physicians Leadership Retreat about the challenges of the past 2½ years. Her heartfelt message is an excellent way to close out Ochsner’s 80th anniversary, with its look to the future and recognition of what we have endured.
