People with lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) have walking difficulty and increased rates of mobility loss, but few effective medical therapies are available. Recent evidence suggests that METformin has therapeutic properties that target the vascular and calf skeletal muscle impairments associated With walking impairment in PAD. We hypothesize that metformin, an inexpensive, widely available, and well tolerated medication for Type 2 diabetes, will Improve walking ability and prevent mobility loss in people With PAD.
